Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from my first session?

In our first session, we’ll explore your expectations and goals for therapy. I’ll ask some questions to get a better sense of what’s bringing you to therapy and to understand what your hopes are for our work together. I will ask questions aimed at understanding what your world looks like and who’s in it. There is no need to worry if you are unsure why therapy is right for you at this time. Often, clients come in with specific goals, only for the work to go in an unexpected but meaningful direction.

How frequently will we meet?

We’ll meet for weekly sessions, which allows us to build consistency and momentum in our work together.

Do you offer in-person or virtual therapy?

I offer virtual therapy for adults (18 and older) throughout New York State via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, I work with various insurance providers including Aetna, Cigna and Evernorth, Meritain Health, Oscar Health, Oxford, United Medical Resources (UMR), UnitedHealthcare UHC|UBH.

What if my insurance provider isn’t listed?

I also work with clients out-of-network. If your plan allows, I’ll provide the paperwork you need to submit claims for reimbursement. Most out of network insurance plans reimburse anywhere from 0-80% of the session cost.

How much will I get reimbursed if I am out of network?

Most out of network insurance plans reimburse anywhere from 0-80% of the session cost.

Is the point of therapy to make me happier?

Yes and No. On the one hand, therapy helps you learn how to become more self-reflective in new and different ways that will allow you to form a healthier and happier relationship with yourself. On the other hand, feeling shame, sadness, envy - a full range of affect - is part of mental health. It’s not about always feeling happy. Therapy helps us grow by learning how to identify, tolerate, and make meaning of our pain.

How long does therapy take?

Some people come for short-term support around a specific issue while others engage in deeper, longer-term work. While I tend to work with individuals in the latter category, we can work together to figure out what makes most sense for you. I check in with clients every few months to see how they’re feeling about our work.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged the full session fee.

What are your specialties?

I primarily but not exclusively work with young men, working adults, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people experiencing depression, grief, shame, and relationship issues.
